South Shore Marine Parts FAQ
Short answer: The part search is free and you pay nothing unless we find your part and you approve it. Send your engine make, horsepower, year and the part (or a photo); we trace the part-number supersessions and send a photo of the actual part before you pay.
Finding parts
How do you find discontinued OMC, Evinrude, Johnson or MerCruiser parts?
We look up the original part number and every later supersession, then check for new-old-stock (NOS) and tested used parts with marine parts sources across Long Island's South Shore and beyond. If we find it, you see a photo of the actual part before you pay. Read more: How to Find Discontinued OMC, Evinrude & Johnson Parts
What does NLA mean on a marine part?
NLA means no longer available: the manufacturer no longer supplies that part number new. The part may still exist as new-old-stock, as a used part, under a superseded number, or as an aftermarket equivalent. Read more: How to Find Discontinued OMC, Evinrude & Johnson Parts
What is a part number supersession?
Manufacturers often replace a part number with a newer one that does the same job. A part listed as NLA under its original number may still exist under a later number, and old boxes may carry only the original number, so search every number in the chain. Do I need the part number to search?
No. Enter your engine make, horsepower and year, or upload a photo of the engine's ID tag or the old part. We look up the factory parts diagram and trace the supersessions. Read more: Discontinued & NOS Outboard and Sterndrive Parts
What information do I need to find a discontinued outboard part?
The engine's full model and serial number from the ID tag, the original part number if you have it, and a photo of the old part. Read more: How to Find Discontinued OMC, Evinrude & Johnson Parts
Why are so many OMC and Evinrude parts discontinued?
Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), which built Johnson, Evinrude and OMC Cobra sterndrives, went bankrupt in 2000, and BRP bought the Evinrude and Johnson brands. On May 27, 2020, BRP announced it was ending Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 production. Parts for older engines are steadily marked no longer available. Can I still get parts for an Evinrude outboard?
Often, yes. BRP said in 2020 that it would keep supplying service parts, but individual parts for older engines can be no longer available, so NOS, tested used or aftermarket parts may be the only options. Read more: How to Find Discontinued OMC, Evinrude & Johnson Parts
Model & serial numbers
Where is the serial number on a Mercury outboard?
Mercury says that on outboards of 8 hp and up, the serial number tag is on the starboard side of the transom bracket, about halfway down. On 6 hp and smaller, it's on top of the swivel bracket. Read more: How to Read Your Outboard Model & Serial Number
Where is the serial number on a MerCruiser sterndrive?
Mercury says the MerCruiser serial number label is on the side of the engine or on top of the flame arrester cover. The drive has its own serial number, so record both. Read more: How to Read Your Outboard Model & Serial Number
Where is the ID tag on Evinrude, Johnson and OMC engines?
On most Johnson and Evinrude outboards it's on the stern or swivel bracket that clamps to the transom. OMC Cobra sterndrives have separate tags for the engine and the drive. Record the whole model number, including the letters at the end, which usually mark the year and version. Read more: How to Read Your Outboard Model & Serial Number
Is the hull identification number (HIN) the same as the engine serial number?
No. The 12-character HIN identifies the boat and is usually on the upper starboard corner of the transom. For engine parts you need the engine's own model and serial number from its ID tag. Read more: How to Read Your Outboard Model & Serial Number
What if my engine's ID tag is missing or unreadable?
Take clear photos of the engine from both sides, any casting numbers and the part you're replacing. Parts often carry their own numbers, which can identify the model. Read more: How to Read Your Outboard Model & Serial Number
NOS, used & aftermarket
What does NOS mean for boat parts?
NOS stands for new-old-stock: original manufacturer parts that were never installed, often still in the factory box. Read more: NOS vs Used vs Aftermarket Outboard Parts: Which to Buy
Are NOS parts better than aftermarket parts?
NOS parts are original factory parts, so they usually match the original fit. Rubber parts can age on the shelf, and some aftermarket makers produce good parts. Compare part numbers, condition and return terms. Read more: NOS vs Used vs Aftermarket Outboard Parts: Which to Buy
Is it safe to buy used outboard parts?
It can be, if the seller tells you what engine the part came from and how it was tested, and shows clear photos. Watch for saltwater corrosion. Read more: NOS vs Used vs Aftermarket Outboard Parts: Which to Buy
When does an aftermarket part make sense?
For common wear items from established makers, where a new aftermarket part may be easier to find than an old factory one. Read more: NOS vs Used vs Aftermarket Outboard Parts: Which to Buy
